Atlantic Whale Deal

Atlantic Whale Deal (AWD) is an ongoing project (2023-2026), led by MARE-Madeira/ARDITI and funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area program, which aims to develop solutions to reduce ship collisions with  the whales’ populations.

Whales play a key role on climate regulation by sequestering large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). By reducing collisions between ships and whales, AWD strengthens carbon sequestration, thus helping to mitigate the effects of global warming.

Together with 14 other partners from different countries (Portugal, Spain, France and Ireland), we are working to prevent these collisions. This involves tracking and development of techniques to find whales, drawing up collision risk maps and creating tools to reduce noise in the ocean. By being part of the team, Mar Ilimitado is once again contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (13 climate action and 14 life underwater).
