Carolina Argnani experience | 2025
“During my master’s internship at Mar Ilimitado in Sagres, Portugal, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in cetacean research, focusing on photo-identification techniques for bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). My responsibilities included collecting field data and photographing the dolphins’ dorsal fins, which are as unique as human fingerprints, allowing for individual identification. These images were then used to update and maintain a digital photo-identification database, utilizing AI software to match individuals with the company’s existing catalog.
Upon my arrival, the AI software had been non-functional for three years, posing a significant challenge. Determined to resolve this, I collaborated closely with the team to troubleshoot and rectify the issues. Through persistent effort, we succeeded in restoring the software’s functionality, enabling it to accurately recognize individual dolphins once again. This achievement not only enhanced our research capabilities but also marked a significant milestone for the organization.
Beyond the technical aspects, this internship was profoundly enriching on a personal level. I was welcomed into a team that felt like family, fostering a supportive yet professional environment. I was entrusted with meaningful responsibilities, and my contributions were genuinely valued. This experience deepened my passion for marine biology and reinforced my commitment to contributing my best to conservation efforts.
The lessons and emotions I carried from this experience are invaluable, and I will cherish them as I continue my journey in marine research.”
